What's in a name? Cochrane Kidney and Transplant

Cochrane Kidney and Transplant is the new name adopted by the Renal Group to reflect and immediately convey the focus and scope of their work. It’s a move that makes sense on many levels, as Coordinating Editor Jonathan Craig explains. ‘We know the word ‘renal’ isn’t one that’s always recognised or clearly understood, especially by people outside of the health professions. Kidney on the other hand is unambiguous and universally understood, so this simple interchange of terms makes much more explicit what it is we do.’

The addition of transplant to the group’s name acknowledges and highlights their wide-ranging work in this important area. ‘Over 40 of the 200 or so prevalent reviews we’ve published concern solid organ transplant,’ says Jonathan. ‘Outside of our group, very few transplant-related reviews are undertaken and no group includes the term transplant in their name. The inclusion of transplant in our new name confirms that this is a significant focus both for our group and for Cochrane more broadly.’

While the group’s name has changed, the scope of their work and activities has not. ‘Ultimately we wanted a new name to better convey the essence of our work,’ Jonathan says. ‘We’re pleased that the clarity and simplicity of Cochrane Kidney and Transplant encapsulates the complex health areas we cover, making our work more accessible and readily understandable for everyone.’
